WhatsApp Rolls Out New Group Chat Features Today

Meta’s messaging platform, WhatsApp, has announced a fresh suite of features aimed at improving how users interact inside group chats. The updates were rolled out on 7 January 2026 and are currently being made available to users worldwide.

What’s New in the WhatsApp Update

WhatsApp’s latest improvements focus on group chat communication and coordination, making conversations more expressive and easier to manage. The key new additions include:

1. Member Tags

Users can now assign custom labels to themselves in group chats.
For example, in a school group you might tag yourself as “Math Teacher,” while in a sports group you could be “Team Captain.”
This helps participants quickly identify roles and improves clarity in large chats.

2. Text Stickers

WhatsApp now lets users convert any typed word or phrase into a sticker.
Unlike earlier workflows, these text stickers can be saved directly to a sticker pack without sending them first in a chat, giving users more creative ways to express themselves.

3. Event Reminders

A new event reminder tool allows group members to set notifications for events created inside a chat.
Whether it’s a meeting, group call, or party, invitees receive reminders early so no one misses the plan.

Together, these features aim to make group messaging more organized and expressive, supporting both social and professional interactions.

Why These Changes Matter

Group chats are central to how millions of users coordinate daily — for everything from family plans and school activities to work teams and interest groups.

  • Member tags reduce confusion in larger groups
  • Text stickers make conversations more expressive
  • Event reminders help keep everyone synchronized

By focusing on these enhancements, WhatsApp is improving both the clarity and usefulness of its core messaging features.

Availability

The update is being phased in gradually, so users may not see all features immediately after updating their app. It is expected to roll out broadly over the coming days and weeks across both Android and iOS devices.

How to Use These Features

If you have already updated WhatsApp:

✔ Go to a group chat
✔ Look for the tag icon next to member names
✔ Try typing any phrase and save it as a text sticker
✔ Create an event in a group and set a reminder

These changes do not require you to install a separate app — only the most recent version of WhatsApp installed from your device’s app store.
